Frequently Asked Questions (Updated 12/06/08)

  • How many cats can be programmed in?
You can program in up to 12 cats. Simply hold down the green button until the Pet Porte beeps then pass your cat under the scanner porch. There is no need to try to push your cat through the door! The microchip cat flap will beep to let you know your cat has been programmed in. Repeat for all cats you own. Your cats will then be able to get in on their own. The door will remain locked for any other unauthorised cats.

  • Can it be fitted in glass?
Yes. Any competent glazier who is able to make a rectangular hole can fit the Pet Porte in glass. It is more tricky than fitting it into wood or UPVC but it certainly is possible and a lot of customers already have their Pet Porte's fitted in double glazed windows and glass doors.

  • Does it come in a wall version?
Yes. If you would like your Pet Porte to go through a wall please call us and we will happily send you the wall installation kit. This is only £5 more than the standard microchip cat flap.

  • Can my cat still wear a collar?
Yes if you like your cat to wear a collar this will not interfere with the way that Pet Porte reads your cats microchip implant. No special collar is necessary, unlike with magnetic, infra-red, or other RFID types of cat flaps on the market. Pet Porte is the only cat flap that doesn't require a special collar or tag.

  • My cat is already microchipped. Will she need microchipping again?
No. Thankfully the Pet Porte works with your cats existing microchip implant and is compatible with all the microchips currently implanted in the UK. You can check to see if your cats microchip will work by using our handy microchip number checker before purchasing.

  • My cat hasn't been microchipped yet. Is it something my vet can do?
Yes. Vets are currently microchipping thousands of cats each month. The Cats Protection Society microchip all their cats now and the RSPCA also offer cat microchipping. There are also organisations such as Peddymark who will microchip your cat at home. Microchipping offers significant benefits compared with collars because the microchip once implanted is not susceptible to loss, unlike a collar ID tag.

  • Will my cat get on with it? She has an unusual way of coming through our existing cat door.
Yes. We find that cats actually get on with the Pet Porte microchip cat flap more easily than other types of cat flaps on the market. The sensor porch is positioned specially so that when your cat uses his or her paws to open the cat door the RFID scanner will read their microchip number and the door will open. If your cat uses his or her head to open the door they will also be able to get in without any problems.

  • I want my cat to be able to get out at night. Is the day/night sensor function optional?
Yes. If you live in an area where it is safe for your cat to be out at night you can leave the door unlocked. Your cat will then always be able to get out and in again, but other cats are locked out. There is also a vet mode if you ever want to keep your cat in day and night.

  • Is it easy to use?
Yes with a simple two button operation and easy to recognise indicator lights you will get to grips with the Pet Porte microchip cat flap within days. You may notice that even your cats learn that if the red light is on then the door is locked. The programming buttons are resistant to tampering by even the cleverest of cats!

  • A tom cat from the neighbourhood found a way to bash his way through our magnetic cat flap. Is your cat flap strong enough to keep other cats out?
Yes. The Pet Porte microchip cat flap is designed by a leading vet and the combination of extra strong plastic door and patented locking mechanism is totally resistant to even the strongest cats attempts to get in - even if there is a bowl of tasty food the other side of the door!

  • My cat is being terrorised by another cat in the neighbourhood. If she runs inside will the door lock fast enough to keep the other cat out?
Yes. The door locks very quickly (within 2-4 seconds) once your cat is safely inside. If a cat is being chased the other cat is normally far enough behind for the door to lock in time.

  • Are there other microchip cat flaps on the market?
Yes. There are other microchip cat flaps but Pet Porte is the only electronic cat flap that does not require a special collar or RFID tag. The Pet Porte microchip cat flap works using your cats existing microchip implant. Therefore it can recognise your cat instantly and there are no expensive collars that could go missing, and there is no chance of your cat getting caught on anything whilst playing outside. Cats love it!
