The microchip cat flap is powered with an AC adaptor because it continuously scans for your cat.
Your cat does not need to break any infrared beam in order for the microchip cat flap to scan your cats pre-existing microchip.
This means that the door will always unlock before your cat gets to the door so there is less chance of your cat being injured if the door does not unlock before they touch the flap.
"What happens in the event of a power cut?"
The microchip cat flap will only scan when it is powered. Therefore your cat will not be able to get in if it is without power. However, the memory is preserved indefinitely so when power resumes it will remember your cat and your cat will be able to get in.
In you live in an area that is effected by power cuts regularly we suggest you purchase an "Uninterruptable Power Supply" (UPS device) which is available from most electrical outlets and at online electronics and computer stores.
An uninterruptable power supply stores power whilst it is plugged in and then gradually releases it if there is an interruption in power. A UPS device that can power a computer for several hours would have enough power capacity to power the microchip cat flap for a long time.
